StruCad 绘图竞赛 2003/04
11th December 2003
The International StruCad Drawing Competition is growing in size and reputation every year, offering the best opportunity in the industry to recognise and celebrate achievement in steel detailing.
This year in anticipation of a record number of entries the entry process has been simplified making it even easier for you to gain the recognition (and award) that your work deserves. Winners will receive a prestigious award certificate and gift and will receive maximum advertising exposure by AceCad worldwide in International Newsletters and on our web site.
If you have a completed a steel structure that is worthy of recognition, why not enter it? The conditions of entry are enclosed along with your entry form (please photocopy for multiple entries).
Due to the high level of interest in this years competition we have decided to extend the closing date to the end of the year.
This year our award is a prestigious trophy, which we hope you will treasure.
Good Luck!

StruCad Drawing Competition 2002/2003 Winner
STAM GROUP MALAYSIA
Putranjaya Convention Centre
The Putrajaya Convention Centre is located in Precinct 5 of the Federal Administration Centre of Putrajaya, on top of ’Puncak Selatan’. Due for commission by the STAM Group later in 2003, it is a world-class convention centre, able to accommodate up to 2800 delegates.
The Centre has a floor area of 135 000m2, which includes basement car parks and multi-level convention facilities. The structure below ground floor level is constructed with conventional reinforced concrete, whereas the structure above the ground floor is of a composite steel frame construction. The main block is circular in shape, enclosed by a series of radiating circular columns, of 70m, 100m and 130 meters diameter. A unique form of roof structure consisting of an 80m single span box main truss, supporting both the intermediate and lower roof trusses, encloses the building. This concept in turn makes the structure of the roof, both distinctive and contemporary.
The fabrication of the truss connections, especially the ’Crab Claw’ end frame that supports the central roof, is challenging as it involves extensive welding and tight distortion control. A high degree of accuracy in fabrication is required, such that the individual components are aligned correctly during erection. The tight delivery schedule was based on a weekly production of 300 tonnes of fabricated steel. StruCad ensured that the tight delivery programme was met.
Due to the enormous forces on the roof structures, high strength bolts of a diameter up to 48mm were used. The purlin’s spacings vary from 2.5m to 5.0m and are arranged to form a complex geometry of the roof with a double curve.
StruCad’s Contribution:
It gave the ability to model complicated structures and obtain detail shop drawings that would have been otherwise impossible.
The structure contained many different trusses, broken into small member segments, with complicated connection nodes. StruCad allowed for the detailing and fabricating of even the most complicated node containing 10 stubs.
The project had a very tight schedule. StruCad enabled STAM Consult to break the roof into two major parts, each detailed by one experience detailer. One half of the symmetrical structure was modelled and the "Mrotate" command settled the other half.
During the process of shop detailing, StruCad enabled the STAM Group to pinpoint any problems and highlight them to the Design Consultant. Without StruCad, it would have been almost impossible to spot these problematic areas.
StruCad allowed the engineer, fabricator and erector to work together efficiently by showing erection marks in the 3D view.
